I decided to be a room mom for my daughter's kindergarten class- not because I am an over achiever or love small little children. It was for purely selfish reasons- she has allergies and I wanted to make sure she would be included on the class parties. I had know idea what I was getting into. Luckily I was teamed up with three veteran moms. We made it through Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day and St. Patricks Day- it was now the big one- the teacher's birthday. A few of the moms had seen Payton's birthday cake- so I said I would take care of the cake. It never occurred to me that the kids reactions would reflect on my daughter.
I when through my usual design process by now- which was not think about it during waking hours- rather think about it when I was awake at three in the morning along with the list of others things that were piling up in my brain like laundry. Then two or three days before decide. Monkeys it is. She loved monkeys. Banana cake with chocolate ganache covered ribbons of purple fondant.
The monkeys looked great, I thought the cake looked great, the moms oooh and ahhhhed. Now I had to face the battalion of kindergartners.
"it tastes like banana bread," Came from one side of the room. Then from the other, "the frostings like play dough." "I want a cupcake".
The adults thought it was amazing. Then I picked Payton up- "mom, the kids said the frosting was like play dough so next time you make a cake can we change the frosting and oh yeah, just chocolate, plain chocolate, because Amanda and Ayanna just want chocolate!" I still think it is a great cake- but some times kids just want cake!
